Boston area chapter Mini-Newsletter & Activities – Fall 2008

Hello,

Here’s a mini-newsletter for greater Boston Antioch alumni. Note the activities September 13, September 20-21, and November 15 — we hope you’ll join us!

The University Trustees and the Alumni Board continue to discuss how to turn Antioch College over to its alumni. This is very good (if undramatic) news. Separating the College from the University is not a quick or easy process.

Join your fellow Antioch alums at the annual Cape and Islands get-together, Saturday, September 13. It’s a great time of year to visit Martha’s Vineyard, and you’ll have a great group of people to spend the afternoon with. For details, see below. Search for (*) to go straight to this information.

The Nonstop Institute in Yellow Springs has designated September 20-21 “Nonstop Rocks” weekend. Alumni chapters nationwide are planning fundraisers, because the Institute urgently needs your help — among other things, it is paying the salaries of the former Antioch College faculty for the interim. Locally, Alumni Board member Mike Brower is organizing a phone tree for that weekend. Taking part might even be fun — you’ll have the chance to reconnect with your classmates and to talk with some of the other remarkable College alums. Contact Mike at mbrower32 or 617-492-1357 to help or for more information.

Save the date: Saturday, November 15, for our big annual event. This year we are planning an ambitious symposium on Reinventing Higher Education, with an optional dinner to follow. Details will be coming next month. To help with organization or planning, contact Roy Crystal at the3crystals.

Sad news: The eminent professor of psychiatry Stuart Hauser, a 1960 graduate of Antioch, died August 5. To read the Harvard Medical School press release, see below. Search for (**) to go straight to it.

DIRECTIONS TO THE Cleaveland House

The Cleaveland House is on the West Tisbury-Edgartown Road in West Tisbury. Coming from Vineyard Haven it’s on the right just after New Lane and a large boat.

If you’re coming from off Island, my recommendation is to leave your car on the mainland, and take the Vineyard Transit Authority bus from the ferry terminal in Vineyard Haven to my house. Buses leave three times an hour, take about a half hour to get to my house, and cost $2.

If you’re taking the bus (Vineyard Transit Authority) from the Steamship Authority Terminal, both the No. 2 and the No. 3 will let you off at the corner of Old County Road and the WT-Edgartown Road, and it’s a very short one block walk to your left (east). No. 2 leaves every half hour at 22 and 52 minutes after the hour; No. 3 leaves every hour at 7 minutes after the hour. The bus ride takes less than a half hour and costs $2. Make sure you
tell the bus driver you want to get off at the corner of Old County Road and the WT-Edgartown Rd.

You can take a taxi, but it’s about $20.

If you’re driving from the Vineyard Haven ferry: follow other cars off the ferry, left onto the paved road, immediately get into the right lane, turn right at first intersection, about one city block, and immediately get into left lane (State Road). Stay on State Road for 3 miles to a Y. Take the left fork (Old County Road) to the end, 3.5 miles. Old County Road ends at
the WT-Edgartown Rd. Turn left (east, toward Edgartown), go 0.2 mile (about a city block). The Cleaveland House is the first driveway on the right after New Lane. New Lane is a boundary of my property. There is a large boat between New Lane and the drive, and there’s a small green sign “Cleaveland House c1750.” Plenty of parking.

From Oak Bluffs or Edgartown: Make your way to the County of Dukes County Airport and check your odometer. The Cleaveland House is on the left, exactly 3 miles from the airport entrance on the same road, the West Tisbury-Edgartown Road. A quarter mile before the house you’ll pass the fire station on the right, then dip down into a small valley and up the other side, and the Cleaveland House is on the left among a lot of trees, the drive is immediately after the house. If you pass New Lane on the left or Old County Road on the right, you’ve gone too far. Back up.

Stuart Hauser

The HMS flag is at half-staff today in memory of Stuart T. Hauser, MD, professor of psychiatry at Judge Baker Children’s Center, who died on August 5, 2008. He succumbed to a fast moving infection after surgery for esophageal cancer. Dr. Hauser was 70.

Dr. Hauser received a bachelor’s degree from Antioch College in 1960, a master’s degree in social anthropology from Harvard University in 1965, a medical degree from Yale University in 1966, a doctorate in psychology from Harvard University in 1977, and a diploma from Boston Psychoanalytic Institute in 1978. Those who knew him well say that these milestones were only the beginning of a remarkable professional life of scholarship and research for a man who was truly a lifetime student.

Dr. Hauser completed his residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC) from 1967 to 1970, followed by research training in adolescent development and adolescent psychopathology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, from 1970 to 1972. He returned to the HMS community in 1972 and went on to serve in a variety of roles for nearly three decades, including as director of the Youth Development Project at the Diabetes Research and Treatment Center of Joslin Diabetes Foundation. He also served on staff at McLean Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston. In addition, he was director of Judge Baker Children’s Center (JBCC) from 1993 to 1996 and president of the Center from 1997 to 2004.

He returned to a full-time career of research, training and teaching when he stepped down as president. Dr. Hauser had a respected international reputation and played major faculty roles in the United Kingdom and Norway. He set about building support for expanded training and research at the JBCC. In 2008, his legendary Clinical Research Training Program received renewed funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, extending the program into its third decade—unprecedented in NIMH history.

“Stuart’s legacy at the Judge Baker Children’s Center is rich and diverse,” said Dr. John R. Weisz, current president and CEO of the JBCC. “It includes excellence in clinical research, an enduring commitment to high quality professional training, and a decade of administrative leadership culminating in our award-winning new facility in Mission Hill. But most memorable to so many of us is Stuart the colleague, mentor, and friend, continually working to improve the human condition, one person at a time.”

Dr. Hauser served on numerous local, regional and national committees. HMS current committee service included chairing the Promotions committee in the department of psychiatry and as a member of the Committee on Faculty Conduct.

“Stuart supplied a humane and perceptive touch,” said Dr. Paul S. Russell, chair of the Conduct committee. “He was a valued and much appreciated member. He enjoyed problem solving solutions that worked for everyone.”

Dr. Hauser also served on the editorial boards of numerous journals, holding posts as an associate editor for research at the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the Journal of Adolescence. He was the recipient of many honors and awards and had been a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association since 2002.

Dr. Hauser leaves his wife, Barbara; two sons, Joshua and wife Juliet; Ethan and wife Megan; grandson Jonathan and granddaughter Emily; and countless friends and colleagues.

Services will be private. A memorial service will be organized by the family in the fall. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Stuart T. Hauser, MD, PhD Fund, Harvard Medical School Office of Resource Development, 401 Park Dr. Suite 22 West, Boston, MA 02215.
