San Francisco – 2 Limbo parties – September 20

To SFBA Antioch Alumni:

Join with us in a nationwide effort the third weekend in September to bring attention and funding to the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute, the formal name for the heroic efforts to retain the heart and soul of Antioch College while we continue to wrest it from Antioch University.

We continue to sit in limbo awaiting news of the outcome of the conversations between the Alumni Association and the University Trustees. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we have planned two Limbo Parties for Saturday, September 20th. You’ll have a chance to learn more about Nonstop, a dynamic vehicle for keeping the spirit and essence of the college we attended in good working order while we wait for the outcome.

Come limbo with us on Saturday, September 20th in San Francisco or Oakland, or both!

Ÿ         San Francisco, at the home of Barrie and Peter Grenell ‘61, ‘65

7:00 – 10:00 p.m.

4340 – 25th Street (between Diamond and Douglass), SF 94114

We’re hopeful that the Lucky Band will play at both events, including “Sitting here in limbo….” with our own special words. Calling all limbo-ers!

Please bring some food or beverage to share and plan to make a donation for Nonstop.

Photos from SFBA “Second Sunday” gathering 08/10/08

About a dozen alumni showed up at the first “Second Sunday” gathering at Au Coquelet in Berkeley (Second Sunday of the month); three were newcomers, hadn’t been to any of our other gatherings—actually four, counting Levi. Attached are a few photos—thanks to Rufus Diamant ’65—one of Levi Cowperthwaite ’08 and Dorothy Headley ‘36, the youngest and oldest present. Also a nice one of Kris Muller and Charlotte Rivers, and me with my “Save your money, honey” sock. It was the Antioch anthem when I started in 1960:

Old version:

Save your money, honey.
Put it in a sock.
When your kids, grow up
Don’t send them to Antioch,
Save your money
Save your money
Save your money, honey,
CCNY is free

New version:

Save your money, honey.
Put it in a sock.
When your kids, grow up
Send them to Antioch,
Save your money
Save your money
Save your money, honey,
CCNY is no longer free.

Notes from Bay Area Alumni Chapter Meeting July 13, 2008

Notes from Bay Area Alumni Chapter Meeting July 13, 2008 at the Home of Ben Westheimer

Regular, pre-set monthly meetings at designated places and times.
There seemed to be interest in this, and Au Coquelet in Berkeley looks good, as does Schroeder’s in San Francisco. John Mendelson expressed an interest in weekday gatherings so they don’t interfere with family time.

The group passed a resolution suggested by David Vincent:
Thirty Antiochians meeting in Oakland on July 13, 2008 unanimously express their support and encouragement to Lee Morgan and Matthew Derr in their conversations for a successful outcome in achieving a separate and continuing Antioch College.

Rufus is interested in creating a photo and video gallery for our group. He would also like to scan in old Murph photos. John Knox knows someone who may be able to help with this. Anyone with photos should send them to Rufus.

What about a quarterly Div Dance?

There was some discussion of the importance of a vision for people to get behind. Some wonder what the revived Antioch College will be. Some have been away for a long time and have heard that Antioch went downhill. It will be important to have a vision that folks want to support. Also, it would be nice to be able to participate in what it will be. Is anybody working on this? If so, what have they decided? John Mendelson threw out a challenge:
Anyone who wants to participate in creating a vision for the new/revived Antioch College, send “My Vision for Antioch College” to John Mendelson in 500 words or less and with 4 bullet points (included in the 500 words). Deadline: September 15, 2008.

We talked about how to manage communications among our membership and some suggested through Facebook or LinkedIn. We’ll look into these.

Karsh offered to keep the chapter site up to date on the antiochians.org site. Barrie will find out how to do that and let him know.

The concerns:
 How is the money (the $18 million raised so far) being spent and who decides?
 It was hard to see the decay of the campus, the graffiti
 A few people said they had made pledges in the fall but nobody asked them to deliver; where’s the follow through?
 The renewed Antioch should not be the Antioch of the past but what the future needs—these may not be mutually exclusive
 Co-op is important but needs to address the new realities of the workplace

Grita was a TA in biology and Mario Capecci was one of her students. Her husband could be helpful with recruiting students as his job is to help students find colleges; he also reviews applications for UC Berkeley. Grita says there are so many fine students who do not get into the colleges they want who would be great for Antioch. She thinks we could do very well at Berkeley High.

Several people talked about what Antioch means, what it has meant to them in their lives, etc.:
 Antioch is important in the nation and the world.
 Antiochians possess a level of integrity, an interest in doing the right thing, in doing good; they are engaged in the world.
 Most of us are still very connected with other Antiochians, we talk to them regularly and they are important in our lives
 Antiochians are generous
 Antiochians are interesting people
 Co-op was/is key to an Antioch education
 Antioch helped me develop my world view; I want to see that way of looking at things survive—knowing how to think critically is so important for our nation and the world
 At reunion someone talked to a woman from housekeeping whose family had been maintaining the college for more than 100 years; we need to remember what the college has meant to those who were not necessarily students

Alumni would like a place they can find Antiochians they’ve lost touch with. The Alumni Association web site should have some mechanism for doing this. Facebook was a suggestion, but it requires that both parties be Facebook members. Meanwhile, anyone wanting to find a fellow Antiochian may call or email _______________ with your contact information; we will find the targeted alum if we can and give them your info to get in touch you. That way we won’t open ourselves to breaching the confidentiality of our lists and still facilitate our community building.

SFBA Alumni Chapter Events for Support Antioch Weekend

The San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA) Antioch College Alumni Chapter will hold two outdoor events the weekend of August 17-19. Alumni and friends of the College are invited to come and learn what is being done locally to stop the Antioch University Board of Trustees (AUBOT) from closing the doors to the College in July of 2008. At both events, alumni and friends can learn what they can do to join the national and local efforts to “be ashamed to let it die!”
